Detailed Review
Jeff Button ISA Certified Arborist Owner Adel Tree, IA
We first saw the Jailbrake at the 2021 TCIA expo in Indianapolis. My immediate thought was, "that's a neat idea." Honestly I didn't give much thought after that. We were use to using what we had and what we knew. At that time we primarily rigged down trees through the use of steel figure 8's or portawraps. Rope twist was just an annoying, but accepted part of tree work.
Through a conversation with Jack and a better understanding of how the tool really worked we decided to try out a mini Jailbrake (JB). Jack could not have been better to deal with, he sent me a prototype mini JB and told me, "let us know what you think. If you like it, buy one. If you don't, just send it back."
When we started using the JB, rope twist was completely a thing of the past. My ground crew took an immediate liking to the device and efficiency went way up. The rope stayed true to form and due to the smooth operation of the device, we were able to take the lowering of limbs and wood from a two guy operation to a one guy operation. It's entirely possible to let out enough slack in the system for one guy to lay down material without the need for a second to pull or steer the piece.
We did send the prototype back... not because we didn't like it, but because it was a prototype and a few smaller design changes were made before the mini was offered for sale. The few weeks we went without the JB were miserable, my ground crew complained about how much better the JB was incessantly. Haha
The learning curve on this device is not excessive, but not nothing. That said, if you're reasonably intelligent and understand physics you'll be able to work this device with no troubles. Start small, take more wraps than you might need at first. You'll get the hang of it quickly.
As my business continues to grow, the JB will be a featured tool on every truck. I think it's quickly becoming an essential device for professional tree work. We have two right now, a mini and full size HD unit. Honestly, the mini version is probably enough for most tree crews. 2000# is a lot, 5000# for the full size HD is more than most will ever see. If you're regularly bringing down pieces that weigh more than the JB can handle, buy a crane.
Jack and Seth are solid guys building solid equipment right here in America. I can't see any professional tree crew not quickly falling in love with these devices as we are.
I wasn't paid for this review in any way, shape, or form. DM me if you want more information.
TL:DR The Jailbrake rocks, you should get one.
NO MORE ROPE TWISTS
By eliminating the wrapping of the rope around a cylinder, the Jail Brake doesn't produce hockles/rope twists/kinks. This saves your groundsman time and you money
SAVE YOUR ROPE
Aluminum construction with engineered venting, means the device is one of the most efficient at drawing heat away from your rope. Load isn't concentrated on one part of the device which means your rope isn't generating nearly as much heat or wear on your equipment
EASY TO USE AND TEACH YOUR NEW GUYS
No hidden cleats or confusing rope path. Simply make sure the rope is through the top pigtail, around the bottom rung and out through the bottom pigtail. Easy to see even from up in a tree
How much weight per wrap? Can you overwrap the device? How do different ropes react with the same weight?
